Of ethics and manners

Martijn Gerrard Garritsen is a 22 year old, Dutch Producer. He grew up in a musical life of his own. He got inspired after watching Tiesto performing at the 2004 Summer Olympics during a commercial break. Garrix became the number one DJ in 2016. People often disagree on the way he became the world’s greatest DJ at a very young age. Here are a few reasons why Martin Garrix is one of the most well deserved producers of all time.

Who took my time?

Many months ago, I was stalking Vivy Yusof’s Instagram page and she posted videos of a talk she attended on her Instastory. It was pretty late. I had just put my daughter to bed, and because I did not want the sound of the video to wake her up, I watched the videos without its sound. Couldn’t be bothered to take my headphones downstairs either. Watched the video, read the caption to one of the videos, which immediately caught my attention.

Ready, set, GOAL

Football is one of the most merry sports there is. 22 men chasing after 1 ball. But, they all have a goal. Place the ball into the net. That is the goal.

Needless to say, having a goal gives us direction. That everything planned or executed, is with the intention of meeting the goal. Every argument, debate, disagreements, hustling, strategies, all happen in order to meet the goal.

Shiny and New

I was watching a TEDx Talk by Gautam Khetrapal back in November of last year. Mr Khetrapal asked his audience if they had a smartphone. The camera did not show the audience, but by the look of his expression, I am assuming a majority of them put their hands up. He then asked how many of them had the same phone in the past 2 years. Again, the camera did not show the crowd, but through his reaction, hardly anyone put their hands up.

Fight song

We have all been hearing and reading about how our current young generation lack knowledge because they do not read. Abedeen students have reading time. There are times they are taken to the library to do some reading. During these times, they are allowed to ask their teacher for meaning, pronunciation, etc. At other times, the teacher would read them stories. It is part of our effort to create a future generation of leaders who read.

Look Ma, no hands

‘Teacher! I know how to change my clothes!!!!!’

Yes, with multiple exclamation marks because this student was ecstatic that she had mastered a new skill: Dressing up on her own.

The first 2 weeks was a struggle for her. Granted, as a 7 year old, mom and dad would always help her get dressed up. So when she had to get herself changed from school clothes to PE clothes, vice versa, she got very frustrated, and would end up crying to vent her frustrations out.

A little goes a long way

Over the past few days, I have had the chance to speak to several parents and I was enlightened by a consistent comment.
“My daughter/son has become more confident and has become more matured.”
“My child used be cry over small things. That has stopped since coming to Abedeen.”
Their children learned to grow up. As I was further chatting with the parents, we discovered that giving them a responsibility was the motivation. They were excited. They wanted to voice their ideas. They wanted to prove themselves.

Fun with poems

Preparing students for an exam has never been this fun.

As the PT3 students gear up for the examinations just around the corner, they were asked to write their own poem. Enjoy!
